At our Friday, October 23 classification meeting, King Plumbing took centre stage for an informative presentation on plumbing, water treatment and home protection solutions for homeowners and businesses. Members saw photographs of actual installations and learned where these systems can make a difference.

Plumbing services, construction and renovations

King Plumbing’s work includes residential and commercial plumbing installations for new homes and commercial units, as well as kitchen, bathroom, laundry room and basement renovations.

Everyday services include clearing blocked drains, repairing broken pipes, fixing leaking taps and addressing seized plumbing fixtures.

Water purification and treatment

The presentation explored different water quality concerns and the treatment systems available to address them.

  • Water softeners help address hard water and mineral buildup.
  • Reverse osmosis systems provide filtered drinking water through a dedicated kitchen tap.
  • Iron filtration addresses iron-related discolouration and metallic tastes, including in well water.
  • Carbon and chlorine filtration can help improve water taste and odour by reducing chlorine and certain other contaminants, depending on the system.
  • UV treatment uses ultraviolet light to inactivate bacteria and other microorganisms when the system is correctly specified and maintained.

Protecting properties from water damage

King Plumbing discussed battery backup sump pump systems, which offer additional protection if a primary pump fails or electrical power is interrupted.

Members were also introduced to the Moen Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff. The system monitors water pressure, flow and temperature, detects unusual usage and can automatically shut off the supply when a leak is detected. Homeowners can monitor and control the system through a smartphone, with additional leak detectors placed in vulnerable areas such as beneath sinks.

The presentation also touched on documentation for insurers. Any eligibility for an insurance discount depends on the insurer, policy and installed equipment; homeowners should confirm the requirements with their provider.

A proactive approach to plumbing

The takeaway was that plumbing involves much more than responding to emergencies. Appropriate water treatment, preventive maintenance and monitoring technology can help protect properties, improve water quality and reduce the risk of costly repairs.

For BEO members, the presentation highlighted useful introductions to homeowners, property managers and businesses planning improvements or looking to address water concerns. Thank you to King Plumbing for a practical and informative classification presentation.
